Catalyst Charter School
Catalyst is a tuition-free, non-profit charter school in Bremerton open to all students regardless of ability, need or zip code. The first phase of this education space is a full renovation of 20,000 square feet―12 classrooms plus a cafeteria, meeting rooms, and faculty space.
A custom “welcome wall” is the first thing everyone sees upon entering the building. This colorful feature says, “We’re glad you’re here.” in all languages spoken by Catalyst students. At the main entrance, warm woods are used to display Catalyst’s core values of BRAVE: Belonging, Resiliency, Achievement, Vulnerability and Enthusiasm.
The original glass block windows maximize natural light and classroom windows add views of Sinclair Inlet. Vibrant blues, greens, and crisp white run through the two-story school. Angled walls and painted alcoves and doorways highlight the main corridor. Each alcove has built-in bookshelves, benches, and coat hooks that provide space for backpacks and student area. Materials throughout the school were carefully chosen to echo Catalyst’s “scrappy” nature and resourceful style.
